Ford's Theatre—originally opened in 1863—celebrates the legacy of the 16th President of the United States, President Abraham Lincoln. With theatrical productions, museum exhibits, and educational programming, Ford’s Theatre has welcomed millions of site visitors, patrons, and learners since re-opening its doors in 1968. Shows at Ford's Theatre range from classic to contemporary works; its museum includes exhibits on Lincoln’s presidency; and, its Center for Education and Leadership offers outreach and educational programs, seminars, and workshops. Operating through a partnership between the National Park Service and Ford's Theatre Society, Ford’s Theatre is known for hosting the Lincoln Medal awards ceremony—a medal awarded to a person (or persons) who, through their body of work, accomplishments, or personal attributes, exemplifies the lasting legacy and mettle of character embodied by President Lincoln. Past recipients of the medal include The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton, Dr. Maya Angelou, General Colin Powell, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Julie Andrews, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Aretha Franklin, and Sidney Poitier.
With such a unique history and compelling brand recognized nationwide and internationally, this is an auspicious time for the organization. It is within this context that Ford’s Theatre invites nominations and applications for the role of Director, External Communications and Marketing, a position that will give a dynamic leader the opportunity to have an indelible impact on the next chapter of the organization’s evolution—an organization staunchly focused on creating a vibrant, accessible campus that cultivates civic discourse, supports the nation’s educators, and engages the community with its distinctive history.
The Director, External Communications and Marketing is a member of the senior management team and is primarily responsible for the institution’s image, messaging, marketing, and earned revenue. The incumbent is also responsible for developing and growing diverse audiences and for advising and assisting in the generation of contributed revenue as it relates to messaging and brand identity, as well as for generating awareness and the marketing of educational offerings. Of utmost importance is ensuring all communications, marketing, and sales initiatives adhere to the organization’s anti-racism policies while celebrating diversity in audiences and programming.
The successful candidate will possess a passion for arts, culture, and history, having served in progressively senior roles in marketing, communications, audience/member/customer development or public relations, and preferably in a non-profit environment. Applicants should have demonstrated success increasing an institution’s visibility, and reaching or surpassing organizational goals through excellence in strategic planning and analysis. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal skills, and must interact effectively with staff, management, and vendors. They must also have familiarity with audience development strategies, graphic design, e-commerce, social media strategies, SEO, and digital marketing.
