The Paradoxical Emancipator: Abraham Lincoln and the Other Thirteenth Amendment
Crofts writes about the North-South sectional crisis that led to the Civil War. His five books include "Reluctant Confederates: Upper South Unionists in the Secession Crisis" (1989) and "A Secession Crisis Enigma: William Henry Hurlbert and 'The Diary of a Public Man'" (2010). He made many contributions between 2011 and 2014 to the New York Times blog “Disunion.” He earned his doctorate at Yale University in 1968 and taught history at The College of New Jersey from 1975 to 2014.
