Upcoming Auditions

Ford’s Theatre’s A Christmas Carol and Ragtime
Open Call Saturday, August 20

A Christmas Carol
Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (sign up begins at 8:30 am)
Location: Ford’s Theatre’s – Center for Education & Leadership, 514 10th St, NW
(Located directly across the street from Ford’s Theatre)

A Christmas Carol has 13 participating children, ages 7-13: two teams of six children who will split performances, plus one actor (Martha Cratchit) who must be able to perform at all performances. This is the eighth year of this production. While all roles are open, preference will be given to those children who fit the existing costumes.

The commitment dates for children are October 28, 2016 until December 31, 2016. If you are unable to commit to these dates, we will be unable to cast your child and ask that you do not continue with the audition.

The tentative schedule (subject to change) is as follows:

  • Rehearsal in the rehearsal hall (near Eastern Market)
October 28 – November 10: Rehearsal after school (4pm) to 8pm and all day (10am-6pm) on Saturdays and Sundays.  Mondays are the normal days off prior to technical rehearsals, but this is subject to change.
  • Technical rehearsal in the theatre
November 11 – November 16: rehearsals during this period are normally from noon until 10 pm every day, with the exception of two days (TBD) when the tech schedule will be noon until 11:30 pm.  We will do our best to keep the children’s calls during the week to after school hours, but there may be days when we will call the children earlier.  On weekends, children will be called for the entire rehearsal period.
  • Preview performances
Previews are November 17 through November 23.  Curtain times vary (2:00 and/or 7:30 depending on the day) followed by a 1 hour note session. There may be some afternoon rehearsal calls during the preview period, but we will try to keep these outside of school hours.  There will be no rehearsal or performance on Thanksgiving.

Performances

  • November 25-December 31
If your child is cast they will be assigned to a team that will have a specific calendar of performances.  Generally each team is assigned 4-5 shows per week, with at least one matinee that is during school hours (sometimes as early as noon).  The weekly day off varies a bit in December.  We do not perform on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  We will attempt to schedule each team for no more than one performance on any given day and will try to alternate performance times so that no team misses more school than the other, however this is not always possible, and there may be days when a team will be asked to perform twice in one day.

Please note: Although children are not called when the other team is performing, each team serves as understudies for the other team.  If, for example, a member of the Red Team is unable to perform at a performance scheduled for the Red Team, the corresponding member of the Green Team will be expected to perform.  While we will give as much notice as possible, we can only give as much notice as the ill cast member gives us.  For this reason, it is important NOT to schedule family events that can’t be easily changed during the performance period.

Please note: that parents are responsible for their children on lunch/dinner breaks during rehearsals, tech rehearsals and between shows when their child performs a two-show day.

Call Backs
Decisions for callback auditions will be made by Monday, August 22 and if we wish to see your child again, we will call you. Callbacks for A Christmas Carol will be held Sunday, August 28, beginning at 9:00 a.m. If you do not receive a call from us, we were unable to use your child this year.  While we are unable to cast everyone, we appreciate your coming today and your interest in Ford’s Theatre.

Conflicts Sheet
Please take a moment to fill out a conflict sheet for your child.  This sheet must be filled out completely in order for us to be able to cast your child.  If your child does not have conflicts, please note that on the sheet.  Conflicts that are not on the sheets will not be accommodated once we are in rehearsal/performance.  Creating the performance schedule for both teams is complicated and we need an accurate picture of each child’s schedule in order to do this.
